The Mexteds team were thrilled to be announced as winners of the Medium Enterprise category at the recent Westpac Porirua Business Awards.

But the icing on the cake was a special award for our director Steve Mexted in recognition of his long-standing contribution to the Porirua business community.

A very special night which was enjoyed by everyone.

Great media coverage here.

Kelburn Park drainage

Nestled between the city and university, Wellington City Council’s Kelburn Park is a high usage venue for urban sport and recreation, used by rugby, league, soccer, winter cricket and touch rugby teams.
A poorly performing 25-year old drainage system, as well as increased usage requirements, saw the Council prioritise it for an upgrade this Spring.
Mexteds was contracted to install new primary drainage  at the park, including 320 metres of collectors and over 3,000 metres of lateral drains.
With our new in-house irrigation capability, we also replaced irrigation lines after trenching.
In the Autumn we’ll be back to install secondary gravel banding for optimum drainage results.

Ecodresser topdressing solution

Spring is in the air, which means a flurry of activity for topdressing and decompaction work to ensure optimum grass growth ahead of the summer sports season.
Good results last year at the heavily used Ngatitoa Domain saw Porirua City Council contract Mexteds to return this year to vertidrain the park, followed by ecodressing.
In one pass the Ecodresser levels any uneven areas, screens stones and creates a well-aerated surface.
As the  'eco' name suggests, there is no need to import costly topsoil. Instead this equipment harvests and recycles surface soil, while leaving the turf intact.

A race to the finish ahead of deteriorating weather saw the Mexteds team of Marcus, Thomas, Chris, Luke and Brent working late at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, with groundstaff from Westpac Stadium, to re-lay the main wicket.
We took 20mm off the top, grooved up the base, graded 10ml of new clay, sowed and drag matted, and tucked the new wicket up in a growth blanket, all before the rain set in, but not before darkness fell.

Dimple seeding at Martin Luckie park

We're expecting a tinge of green to be coming through at Martin Luckie Park in Berhampore this week - soon to be the practice ground of the Wellington Phoenix Football Club.

Recently we’ve been dimple seeding the first of the two fields, having spread 2,000 tonnes of sand (and counting) to form a 100mm sand carpet. The ground will be ready for the Phoenix to swing into action in Spring.

Mexteds has already installed primary drainage and irrigation, before planing the surfaces, laser grading and sand slitting.

We made a flying visit to Palmerston North last week to gravel band the events quadrant of Palmerston North square at the heart of the city. Arriving on Friday we were home by Sunday. Job done!

Palmerston North City Council Leisure Assets Manager, Brian Way, says this week’s rain has already shown the benefits of the new secondary drainage in the events quadrant, compared with other parts of the square.
“That quadrant is pretty dry compared to the rest. We are pretty happy with the result”.

Karori Park renovations

Playing fields at Karori Park have had a drainage upgrade over the autumn and early winter as we gravel banded the entire six hectare park for Wellington City Council.

We’ve also installed primary drainage and irrigation into the new #5 cricket field.

Come Spring we’ll be back to spread sand, helping to protect the gravel bands and keep the secondary drainage functioning well without contamination from surrounding clay particles.

'Homegrown' is one of Wellington's favourite annual music events, held on 2nd April this year.

Given the large crowd there was a bit of work to be done afterwards in getting the turf back into shape at Waitangi Park.

Mexteds staff have been verticutting, sweeping, topdressing, seed drilling, dimple seeding and fertilizing, so Wellingtonians can continue to enjoy this very popular waterfront park.

With the Football Federation Australia and the Wellington Phoenix having agreed to a 10-year-deal for the extension of the club's A-League licence, Mexteds staff are busy getting the Phoenix's practice grounds into tip top shape at Martin Luckie park, Berhampore.

Stage 1 of the work on the two full size fields included drainage and irrigation installation.

Over the next few weeks we're working on stage 2 of the upgrade, planing the surfaces, laser grading and sand slitting, before sand carpetting and sowing.

The ground will be ready for the Yellow Fever to swing into action in Spring.

Airport nightshift yields great results

Minimising the risk of bird strike has seen Mexteds working the night shift to establish two hectares of special AVANEX turf next to the runways at Wellington airport.

We recently completed the final re-sow, cut and fertilisation, ending the first phase of this year's work. We're now looking to start the next area to be upgraded to AVANEX.

With Mexteds' staff having gone the extra mile to get the work done in the wee small hours, we appreciated a message of thanks from Shane Broderson, Manager Facilities at Wellington International Airport.

"I would like to thank you and your team for all of the hard work they have put in to deliver a successful outcome at times in trying circumstances, we are very pleased with the end result so please pass on our gratitude to your team."
