50th celebrations continue

4/11/2024

Picture
Our 50th Anniversary Celebrations continue! Mexteds has proudly worked for Hutt City Council, Porirua City Council, Wellington City Council, Kāpiti Coast District Council and Upper Hutt City Council over the decades, so it was great to be able to mark the 50th milestone with the local Mayors (l to r) Mayor Campbell Barry, Mayor Janet Holborow, Anita Baker - Mayor of Porirua City, and Mayor Tory Whanau.

Campbell Barry said "Over the past 50 years, Mexted has consistently gone above and beyond in supporting our local sports community. They always go the extra mile, and it is a privilege to partner with them. As a Living Wage employer committed to youth employment, they exemplify what it means to be a good employer. We’re proud to have them here in the Hutt.”

Yarrow Stadium Renos

Our turf renovations team recently spent a few days in Taranaki, using our Koro Topmaker to renovate the hybrid turf at Yarrow Stadium.

New Plymouth District Council's head groundsman, Craig Hitchcock, was pleased with the results, saying "A top job, done by your team."

Golden Celebrations for Mexteds

7/8/2024

50 years in business! Our team had a great time at Boomrock recently, celebrating this major Mexted milestone in style with claybird shooting, archery and hole in one golf in a stunning clifftop location.

There were plenty of memories, photos and camaraderie shared between family and staff as we enjoyed a fabulous lunch together.

Here's to the next 50!

Horton Park Wicket Reconstruction

30/7/2024

Marlborough Cricket is looking forward to the summer season and playing on its long-awaited new wicket at Horton Park, Blenheim. Ed Gilhooly, General Manager of Marlborough Cricket Association, says it’s 20 years since the #1 block was last renovated.

At Easter, Mexted Sports Turf began work to reconstruct the old nine-strip block. The clay was excavated, before spreading 100mm of AP65 basecourse to grade, followed by a 25mm topcourse layer.

Ward clay was used to build the new block, which we laid, compacted and laser levelled to a depth of 125mm. It was then keyed up and fertilised, before a final dressing of clay finished the block off. Soil excavated from the block was re-used to create two new spectator banks.

As part of the upgrade, our irrigation team installed a new
irrigation system so the block can now be irrigated in isolation from the outfield, and a new main was trenched through the outfield to the irrigation control panel.

Cricket Wellington Ground of the Year

30/7/2024

It was congratulations all round as Mexted Sports Turf’s
groundsmen were recognised in the 2024 Cricket Wellington
Ground of the Year awards. Hutt Recreation Ground, which is lovingly managed by veteran groundsman Kevin Wakefield, was voted Ground of the Year by Wellington cricket captains, who score the pitches each week throughout the season.

Kevin has 47 years as a groundsman in the Hutt
Valley and Wainuiomata under his belt, and his
passion and commitment have not only seen him
create exceptional playing surfaces season after
season, but he’s also passing on his knowledge to
our younger groundsmen.

Our Fraser Park, Petone Recreation Ground and
Barton Oval groundsmen deserve an honourable
mention, as they were also ranked in the top five
Cricket Wellington venues this year. Congratulations to Ben Trethewey, John McKessar and Campbell Webster.

McLean Park, Napier

30/7/2024

No sooner had legendary singer, Tom Jones, finished belting
out the final notes of his sole New Zealand concert at McLean
Park, Napier in April, than Mexteds moved in to begin a major
renovation of the outfield and removal of the permanent clay
block in the centre of the field. The outfield is a Motz ECLIPSE hybrid turf, originally installed by HG Turf Group from Australia in 2018.
The surface must be renovated on a regular basis, and this
latest resurfacing was part of the long term maintenance plan and in line with HG Turf Group’s hybrid turf warranties.
Mexteds used a Koro Topmaker unit to remove organic matter, followed by grooving and sweeping to clean up remaining turf debris and stand up the hybrid fibres.
The area was then top dressed with turf sand and broomed to further stand up the hybrid turf fibres, before fertilising and dimple seeding.
Mexteds also removed the old permanent clay cricket block in the centre of the park and reinstated the area to match the rest of the park’s outfield, with geotextile cloth, Megaflo drainage pipe, drainage chip and turf sand.

Hagley Outfield Reshaping

Twelve years after Mexted Sports Turf first built Hagley Cricket Oval, our construction crew of Chris, Dale and Sean were back in Christchurch last week to take the top off the outfield – a major renovation to deal with organic build up and improve surface drainage, to meet International Cricket Council percolation standards.

Watch us in action here:

After the grass was planed off using our Koro Topmaker, a Campey Unirake was used to loosen the surface. We then spread 10mm of fresh sand over the whole outfield.

Earlier Mexteds had surveyed the Oval and created a new 3D model, which was imported into our 3D grading gear using a Leica Total Station to guide our operators. When the job was done, we were pleased to see the result was within 5mm of the design across the whole surface.

The design aspect of the job was more challenging than we initially thought with the centre cricket block remaining at its current height, while reducing the outfield down by 55mm to remove the organic matter.

We knew that after removing the organic matter we only had ~30mm in remaining outfield sand to work with to improve the shape correction, all while trying to protect the integrity of the underlying sand slits.

We also had to work in with the stormwater outlet sumps around the perimeter of the Oval, so along with the wicket block we had two non-negotiables to design around.

This made the resurfacing project far more challenging than a typical job and it required regular core samples, checks and pre-commencement discussions.

Mexteds’ team enjoyed the camaraderie of working alongside Golf & Irrigation and Christchurch City Council grounds staff, who upgraded the irrigation ring main communication cable. CCC’s Hagley Turf Team are now managing the seeding, fertilising and grow-in. Game On!

Re-Turfing Sky Stadium

11/3/2024

Picture
Couldn’t be prouder of Mexteds’ construction team who worked at Sky Stadium through the day and night alongside HG Turf Group, the Sky Stadium team and Roger Morgan of Readylawn Christchurch.
We pulled out all the stops to finish re-turfing the stadium after the Foo Fighters concert, making sure the pitch was ready for the Waitangi Day match between Wellington Phoenix FC and Central Coast Mariners, which was attended by a season-best crowd of over 12,000.

Air Printing - no paint, no fuss
Mexteds has an exciting and innovative new service on offer - air printing images and logos on sports turf!
This state-of-the-art technique involves no paint, and is ideal for sports events in stadiums or where the crowd is viewing from a grandstand to get the best effect.
We have a crew who can bring your air printed logo or message to life with drone footage, just like we did this week for the Team Ledger Harcourts Capital Classic Track & Field event at Newtown Park, Wellington, which was shown live on Sky7 channel.
Get in touch if you have an idea for air printing, be it a marriage proposal or a logo for a sports event, we'll do our best to make it happen!

Surface Transformation with Primary Drainage
Mexteds' construction crew is installing primary drainage in two soccer fields at Mazengarb Reserve for Kāpiti Coast District Council, which are affected by a high water table.
Check out the video to see the team in action!
We'll be back at Mazengarb Reserve in April to install secondary gravel banding drainage, which will complete the transformation of this very popular park.
